Everything YouTube Auto HD can do
One small extension, set once. These are the settings in the popup.
Your quality, every video
Choose anything from 144p to 8K once. Every video starts at that quality, with no menu clicks.
Next best, automatically
No 8K on this video? Auto HD plays 4K. No 4K? 1440p. You never drop lower than you have to.
A separate quality for 60 FPS
For example 4K for regular videos and 1080p for smooth 60 FPS gaming and sports.
A separate quality for Shorts
Keep long videos sharp and Shorts light, or the other way round.
1080p Premium bitrate
YouTube Premium member? Turn on enhanced bitrate and get the sharper "1080p Premium" stream when a video has it.
AI upscaling, your call
Decide whether YouTube's AI-upscaled (super resolution) versions are used on low-resolution videos.
Works across YouTube
Videos, Shorts, YouTube Music and YouTube videos embedded on other websites, including after ads.
The settings menu stays shut
Quality is set through YouTube's own player, so menus don't flash open and videos don't stutter.
See what is really playing
On YouTube the toolbar icon turns red and shows the quality playing right now: 1080, 4K, 8K.

Auto HD for YouTube: questions
How do I make YouTube always play in HD?
YouTube has no permanent quality setting on a computer; it picks a quality based on your connection and window size. Add Auto HD for YouTube, choose your quality once, and every video starts at that quality from then on.
Is Auto HD for YouTube free?
Yes. Auto HD for YouTube is free, with no account, no ads and no paid plan.
Why is a video still not in 4K?
The video wasn't uploaded in 4K, so Auto HD plays the next best quality it has. You can see the real quality on the toolbar icon.
Does it work with YouTube Premium?
Yes. Turn on Premium enhanced bitrate in the popup to get the "1080p Premium" stream on videos that offer it. Without Premium, normal 1080p is used.
Will it use a lot of data?
Higher quality uses more data. If you're on a limited connection, pick 720p or 1080p, or set a lower quality only for Shorts or 60 FPS videos.
Does Auto HD collect my data?
No. Your settings are saved in your browser and nothing is sent to us. See the privacy policy.
Which browsers are supported?
Google Chrome and Chromium browsers that install from the Chrome Web Store, such as Edge, Brave and Opera.
